Wesley Charles Fairbairn “Wes”, passed away on June 1, 2021, of cardiac arrest at age 59 years. He was recently predeceased by his mother Gail Fairbairn in January of 2021, which followed the passing of his father Chuck Fairbairn in January of 2020.
Wes was born on August 29, 1961, in Calgary, Alberta and spent his early childhood in Calgary, Fort St. John, BC and in Edmonton. His formative years were spent in Richmond, BC, graduating from Matthew McNair Secondary School in 1979. Wes worked in the computer and photography department of London Drugs for many years before returning to Calgary in 1989. He spent the past 17 years as store manager for Crowfoot Liquor and was much beloved by his customers.
He lived his life a free spirit and was a creative soul. Wes had a lifelong passion for the arts, including playing guitar [electric/acoustic/bass] in several bands and solo. He was a prolific writer [songs, poems, stories, ballets] and was an exceptional photographer. Wes was a season ticket holder of the Alberta Ballet for over 25 years and delighted in introducing his family and friends to the ballet. In addition, Wes was an avid sports fan, formerly of the Calgary Flames, but most recently of the Toronto Raptors. Prior to our mother’s death, he held a special connection with her on game day and faithfully called her to make sure she knew game time and channel.
Wes loved animals [especially cats and dogs], camping, Magic the Gathering and especially valued personal connections. He was devoted to his family and friends and had long-term friendships [40-50 years] with Richard Vetter, Bob Friedrich and Bob McCauley and many others. He was particularly close with Dan and Chris Chandler and their family.
Wes is survived by his sister Karen [Steve] Smith; nephew Brent [Cassie] Smith; niece Lauren Smith [Sid Zondag]; and by his great nephews and nieces, who are devastated by this sudden loss. He will be greatly missed by his extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and his many friends.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Wes’ name to the Calgary Humane Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or to a charity of your choice.
Internment of ashes will be held privately at a later date.
