Wesley Cooper Obituary

Born in Calgary, AB to Edward and Marie Cooper. The family moved to Shoreacres, BC and then to Nelson, BC where Wes attended kindergarten and where his sister Faith was born. Not long after the family moved back to Calgary. Calgary quickly became Wes’s forever home.

He loved all sports. He loved NHL and cheered for the Calgary Flames. He could tell you the stats for all the players on the team each year. He was especially a fan of the Stanley Cup winning team in 1989. Wes loved the CFL, especially the Calgary Stampeders where he was a season ticket holder for several years before his health started to fail. He especially loved teasing his brother-in-law about the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Wes loved watching Indy Car racing and F1. He even traveled to Vancouver to watch the Molson Indy with his cousin Kevin several times.

Wes was a loyal brother, son, uncle, nephew, and friend. To him his family and faith in God were everything. This included his work family at Leon’s Furniture. Working at Leon’s for 35 years.  He did a variety of positions including swamper, driver, warehouse supervisor, health and safety, emergency contact for the building and Truck Maintenance. When asking about his day he always started with what was happening at work.

Wes also had a hockey family through his many years of timekeeping for the WRAHL hockey league. To use their words “Wes was more than just a timekeeper, he was a fixture at the rink. His steady presence, enthusiasm for the game and unwavering commitment to the league…He brought a quiet passion to every game, taking joy in simply being there, supporting the teams, and ensuring every game went smoothly. Over the years, Wes time kept 1,698 games!”

Wes became friends with all the doctors and nurses he saw over the years for his kidney’s. In 2020, after an 8 year wait, he received a kidney transplant which the nurses cheered for him. When it failed a year and a half later, they welcomed him back with open arms. He would joke around with the nurses at Unit 27 every time he went for dialysis. They all knew him by name.

He is survived by his sister Faith (David) Cooper-Receveur, step siblings Richard DeVulder, Linda (Vern) Schroeder, and Cathy Bedier; nieces Jamie (Brad) Hubbler, Crystal Lauer; nephews Chris DeVulder, Dawson Receveur, Zach Receveur, Noah Receveur and Marcus Receveur; as well as great-nephew and nieces Finnley, Ivy, Millie, and Aubrey.

He was predeceased by his father Edward Cooper, mother Marie Cooper, stepmother Ivy Cooper, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins.
