Wesley Armeneau Obituary

After a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Wes Armeneau passed on Monday, June 17, 2024, at the age of 93 years.

He is lovingly survived by his wife Lorraine (nee Downing), and his two children Barbara McCarten and Derek Armeneau, their respective spouses Colin McCarten and Paule Armeneau, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Wes was born in Bladworth, Saskatchewan on August 27, 1930, to parents Daniel and Elizabeth Armeneau. He was the fourth of five children and was predeceased by Lillian, George, Lawrence (Dewey), and Yvonne.

Growing up mainly in Sylvan Lake, Alberta, Wes was an outstanding athlete, particularly in baseball and hockey in his youth. In his working years, he tried to be outdoors as much as he could, whether that was hunting and fishing in the Rocky Mountain House / Nordegg area in West Central Alberta, or golfing at Windermere Golf and Country Club near Edmonton where he was a member from 1975-2017. He married the love of his life, Lorraine (nee Downing) on October 2, 1954, in Red Deer, Alberta. Although they lived in Red Deer, Lethbridge and Calgary, Edmonton was their long-term home since 1967.

Wes’s first career, of over 30 years, was in the food wholesale business where he retired as an executive with Horne and Pitfield Foods Ltd. His second career was in partnership with his brother Dewey, they built a successful commercial development business that was acquired by Parkland Industries Ltd. in 1990. He was very fortunate to retire comfortably at the relatively young age of 59 and was able to enjoy many years of adventures with Lorraine and family. Sunday dinners at home in Edmonton, with any and all family that could attend, was a cherished part of his life.

Wes leaves a lasting impression of caring, generosity and friendliness throughout his extended family, friends and acquaintances. He was always there to support his family in any way he could with whatever means he had at his disposal. He loved his wife and family dearly and he was, in turn, dearly loved.
