Tyra Violet was born in Rumsey, Alberta on February 26, 1927, and she peacefully slipped the surly bonds of earth on January 1, 2026, with her loving family at her side.
Tyra was a loving and cherished wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. She was a kind and compassionate woman who embodied love, laughter and life. Tyra was an amazing cook, a gifted homemaker as well as being a great listener and good friend to all fortunate enough to have known her. She loved her family, her friends, good food, knitting, crocheting, petit point, games and puzzles, gardening, Caesars and casinos and reality television. In her 98 years, Tyra lived life to the fullest. She had traveled to Europe, Tahiti, most of western Canada and almost all of the United States. She had a wicked sense of humour and had a positive outlook on life; she was the strongest person most of us will ever have met.
Tyra grieved the losses of those who went before her; her husband, Robert (Bob) in 1980, her beloved son James “Dallas” in 2003 and her granddaughter Holly in 1989, as well as her Alberta pioneer parents Oscar and Tyra Johnson, her brothers Jim, Royal and Tom, her sisters Beulah, Elsie, Luella and Alice and her nephew Brian.
Left behind to mourn her loss, Tyra leaves her daughter Valerie and her cherished grandson Jake, as well as her nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Patrick (Zeke) and Betty for all the help extended to ease Aunt Violet’s path the last few months, as well as a “thank you” to the many care givers, nurses and doctors, especially Dr. Marika Shibata, who cared for her.
As per Tyra’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. She would prefer her friends and family to remember her fondly with a smile.
Don’t grieve for me, for I am free.
I could not stay another day.
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way.
I found my peace at the close of day.
If my parting has left a void
Then fill it with remembered joys.
A friend shared, a laugh, a kiss.
Oh yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with time of sorrow.
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life has been full, I savoured much.
Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch
Life up your hearts and smile for me
I am free.
