Shonath Gladys Verbaan

It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of my dear mother, Shonath Verbaan, on June 2, 2025, after a lengthy illness. She passed peacefully in Calgary, surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Shon was born in Luscar, Alberta, to Evelyn and Lawrence Kazmir, and grew up alongside her six siblings. Her youth was spent in the small mining communities of Western Canada, where she had fond memories with family and friends. In her final days, even as her memory faded, she often reminisced about those simpler, joy-filled times.

She married William Verbaan and together they raised two sons, Wayne and Glen. A devoted stay-at-home mom, she raised her boys with love and discipline.  She was our greatest defender and number one fan, never missing sporting events, school adventures or the opportunity to put some TLC and a Band-Aid on a skinned knee.

Shon is lovingly remembered by her son Glen; her grandchildren Jake and Mya; her daughter-in-law Cindy; her sisters Colleen, Wendy, and Heather; her brother Laurie; and her beloved Auntie Janet.

She was predeceased by her son Wayne (2007), her father Lawrence (1988), her mother Evelyn (2014), and her brothers Kelly (1976) and Kenneth (2025).

Shon spent her last few months at the South Health Campus on Unit 68 and the care she received was caring and compassionate.  I thank the wonderful medical staff for their professionalism and kindness.

Shon will be lovingly remembered by family and friends.  At Shon’s request, no services will be held.

If friends so desire in lieu of flowers a memorial tribute may be made directly to Canadian Lung Association.
