Roy Francis Bjornson

It is with deep sadness that the family of Roy Bjornson announces his passing at the age of 97, after a long and fulfilling life.

He was a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather whose presence will be dearly missed. Roy is survived by his eight children: Carl (Lynne Macleod), Nancy Monaghan, Elaine Van Oyen, Chris (Elaine), Stephen, Eric (Brenda Laven), Diane McWilliam (George) and Jon (Connie Geerts). He also leaves behind twelve grandchildren: Jay (Stacey), Paula, Erin (Scott), Kelsey, Tanis (Dan), Jeffrey (Taryn), Lisa (Dennis), Megan (Rob), Alyssa, Annadage, Cynthia and Axel, as well as four great-grandchildren: Jérémie, Jacklyn, Freyja and Jayden. He was pre-deceased by the love of his life, wife Pauline, and also by his sons-in-law Bryan Monaghan and Henry Van Oyen.

Roy was a unique and remarkable individual with many passions. He enjoyed sports and encouraged his children to do the same. He achieved a black belt in Judo, and was a well-respected sensei and competitive official for over 30 years. He loved the outdoors, spending time (together with Pauline) hiking, snowshoeing, biking and birdwatching. Classical music often filled his home while he enjoyed his lifelong love of reading.

Roy was proud of his career as a geophysicist, working for a variety of oil and gas companies for more than 40 years. But it was his large family of which he was most proud and which brought him the greatest joy. He loved hearing the laughter and conversation whenever the family gathered together. He and Pauline were true partners in life, managing the bustle of family life together. After her passing in 2001, he felt her absence deeply and his admiration for her only grew with each passing year.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Cambridge Manor, his home for the past 3 years. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church (10 River Heights Drive, Cochrane, AB) on Thursday, October 23rd, 2025 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation.
