Robert Cornelis de Groot

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Robert Cornelis de Groot in Calgary, Alberta, on June 25, 2025, at the age of 53.

Robert was born in Prince George, British Columbia, on July 25, 1971. He spent his early years in Prince George before moving with his family to Trail, BC, where he attended high school and excelled in sports, especially basketball. Family camping trips across the province were some of his fondest memories.

Later, the family settled in Langley, BC, where Robert attended Fraser Valley Christian High School. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Business Administration from Trinity Western University. A gifted baritone, Robert was a proud member of the university’s Chamber Choir, touring internationally and sharing his love of classical music.

Robert was a successful entrepreneur and businessman. He founded Red Cup Distillery in Edmonton, Alberta, pouring his heart and soul into his work. Known for his conviction and passion, he was unafraid to stand up for what he believed in. Robert was part of a close-knit, supportive community and was deeply cherished for his kindness, gentleness, and generosity.

Robert was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Lambertus Cornelis de Groot and Jannetje Wilhelmina de Groot (née DeViet), as well as his brother Kevin. He is lovingly remembered by his sister, Dr. Tanya de Groot, and her children, Amy and Simon; his brother John DeGroot (Errin Mixon) and their children, Ashley, Isabelle, and Olivia.

A private family service will be held at Langley Lawn Cemetery on August 23, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s memory may be made to Little Warriors in Sherwood Park, Alberta, or to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation in Alberta.
