It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of our son, brother, and uncle Richard (Rick) Dwayne Olson of Calgary, Alberta on May 12, 2026, at the age of 64.
Rick was born on October 17, 1961, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, to Patricia and Merle Olson.
Rick will be remembered for his ability to always have a tinker project on the go. He could overhaul cars, motor homes and boats. He “claimed” he could fix anything. Some worth tinkering on, and others perhaps not. He had a maverick spirit, and a deep love for his family. Being the youngest and only boy in his family, his independent and determined nature was evident from a young age. Known for his quick wit and easy laugh, Rick could turn an ordinary moment into a memory. He will be able to once again see his true love and his very best friend, his dog Fred. Where Rick went, Fred followed and would find them skidooing in the back country together. The family commonly laughed and said, “not sure who follows who.” You always knew that Rick was around when his loyal companion was patiently waiting for him somewhere close by!
He was never happier than when surrounded by family or knee-deep in a project in the garage, always ready to help others solve a problem or build something from scratch. His curiosity and creativity extended into every part of his life, leaving behind countless stories, inventions, and lessons for those who loved him most.
Rick loved to dream, and had a desire to go to Thailand next year. His time was cut far too short, with a lot of unfulfilled plans.
Rick is survived by his mother, Patricia; sisters, Wendy (Richard), Karen (Kim) ; nieces and nephews Kendra, Ashley (Kahle) and Max (Bernadette) , Great niece and nephew, Brooklyn and Theo who all adored their Uncle Rick. He was predeceased by his father, Merle.
A private celebration of life will be held for the immediate family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation
