Randolph Wayne Johnston Obituary

Randolph Wayne Johnston (Randy), aged 75, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026, at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on August 13, 1950, to his loving mother Alice and father Fred Johnston, and he shared a profound bond with his beloved grandmother Anna Johnston. He was a graduate of Grand Centre High School and later the University of Alberta, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching certificate.

Randy was the proud father of his daughter, Hannah, and his son, Lance whom he cherished throughout his life. He dedicated the start of his career to teaching across ages, from kindergarten to vocational school students as a substitute teacher. Amid Calgary’s energy boom, his Zoology degree led him to oil and gas where he joined Geophysical Services Incorporated (a division of Texas Instruments), processing seismic data, including work on a seismic ship off Sable Island, Nova Scotia. After a downturn in the resource industry, he pursued several business ventures including successfully opening Calgary’s second highest volume Mac’s/Esso Convenience Store, two Turbo Gas stations, and a Timothy’s World Coffee shop. In 2005, yearning to teach again, he moved to South Korea to teach at Kyungpook National University in Buk-Gu, Daegu where he taught English to Korean University Students. Around 2010, seeking ocean-side serenity, he made Pattaya City, Thailand, his home where in his semi-retirement he continued teaching Korean students remotely. He returned to Calgary, Alberta, in 2024.

In high school, Randy was a track and field athlete and later enjoyed tennis and golf. He loved to ski with his children. A notable passion of his was martial arts, which he studied for several years at Mike Miles Muay Thai and Kickboxing Club in Calgary.

Randy was predeceased by his mother, Alice (1926–2014), and his father, Fred Johnston (1926–2024). He is lovingly remembered by his daughter Hannah Sung (Oliver Kim), his son Lance Johnston (Helen Kwan), and his grandchildren Ashlee Sung, Kael Sung, Isaac Kim, and Owyn Kim. He is also survived by his brother Paul Johnston (Mirjam Knapik), nephew Sky Johnston, and nieces Brook Atkins, Sunny Bray, and Meadow Johnston.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Alpha House, Calgary.
