Patricia Jones Obituary

Patricia (Pat) Jones, née Munroe, passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Foothills Hospital on September 29th, 2021.

Pat was born and raised in Winnipeg Manitoba. During her childhood, her father spent 5 years away in WWII, and her sister spent 2 years in hospital. She was blessed to be surrounded by many loving aunts and uncles during this time and she spoke of them fondly.

She was a devoted Catholic with a strong faith. She attended St. Ignatius school. Her second-grade teacher, Sister George Mary, became her high school, music teacher. They formed a life-long bond and stayed connected with letters and visits until Sister George passed away in 1993.

Pat joined the Royal Air Force in 1953 as an air defense technician. She served in RCAFB Clinton, RCAFS Edgar, and Metz-Frescaty Air Base in Metz France where she assisted with the setup of their air defense system. Her final posting was to St. Hubert PQ where she met and married the love of her life, Harry (Ted) Jones.

Pat left the Air Force to raise her children and the family followed Ted to postings in Mont Apica PQ, Beausejour MB, Holberg BC, Ottawa ON, Tacoma WA, Dana SK, and Alsask SK. When Ted left the service, they spent 10 years in Kelowna BC, and finally settled in Calgary AB in 1987. Throughout this time, Pat held many jobs as a cook and switchboard operator. At 56, she started as a switchboard operator at the Foothills Hospital, and at 60, she learned to use a computer. She worked on the hospital switchboard for 31 years and made many wonderful friends there. She was 87 when she retired.

Pat’s passion was movies and broadway shows, especially musicals. As a teenager, she knew the staff at her local theatre so well, they would let her return to watch movies over and over again for free. She continued re-watching her favorite movies all her life, and she was a trivia wizard in the movie and musical categories.

Pat was a kind and generous person and was always upbeat and optimistic. She had a wonderful sense of humor and her only complaint in life was “Why wasn’t I born rich instead of beautiful?” In Dana, young french airmen, who spoke very little English, asked her for her name. She said “Just call me Gorgeous.” He did, for all the time he knew her. While she always worked hard, she enjoyed “la dulce de niente” - the joy of doing nothing. She believed in “never put off until tomorrow that which you could put off indefinitely”, and “the only problem with doing nothing is that you’re never sure when you’re done”. She loved to sing, and on the rare occasion she forgot the words to a song, she would make them up, usually with something hilarious.

Pat is survived by her son Brian Jones and his wife Lilly of Saskatoon SK; her daughter Lu Hall and her husband Ray Potvin of Redwood Meadows AB; her sister Sheila Pope and her husband Ross of Kelowna BC; four grandchildren, Jairalee, James, Jordon, and Justis Jones, all of Saskatoon SK; her brother-in-law Colin Jones of Ottawa ON, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ted Jones, in 2015.

At her request, no services will be held. For those who wish to express sympathy, please consider making a donation to your favorite charity in Pat’s name or having a mass said for her.
