Norma Trudeau Obituary

Norma Trudeau (nee Granlien), our beloved Mom, Grandma, and Great Grandma, passed away peacefully at the age of 85 at the Mayfair Care Centre in Calgary, Alberta (AB), on Tuesday, November 26, 2024. She is dearly missed by her son John Trudeau, and daughter Julie Trudeau, John’s wife Barbara, and Julie’s partner Wayne Lloyd, as well as her grandchildren Graham and Sarah Trudeau, and her great granddaughter Ruby. Norma was predeceased by her parents Norman Granlien and Wanda Granlien (nee Brown), and her brothers Lawrence, Mervyn, Ray, and Wayne, and sister Joan Emery (nee Granlien). Norma will also be missed by her surviving siblings, Judy Barron, Emma Daley, Mary Ann Hurrell, and Dale Granlien.

Norma was born on February 12, 1939 in Claresholm, AB. During her childhood she also lived in Stavely, AB, Rosemary AB, and Creston BC. At the age of 19, Norma moved to Calgary where she enrolled in the Dietary Technology program at S.A.I.T., from which she graduated and began her career as a dietician at the Bethany Care Centre in Calgary. She worked briefly as a realtor in Calgary after that, and, before joining the General Hospital in Calgary from which she retired as their Assistant Chef.

Norma met her first husband Walter Trudeau while living in Calgary, and they married in 1959. Their daughter Julie was born in 1960, and their son John in 1962. Norma re-married in 1995 to James Seymour. Both James and Walter pre-deceased Norma.

Norma was involved in several clubs over the years, including Toast Masters, The Calgary Rock and Lapidary Club, and The Calgary Creative Arts Guild, to name a few. She loved to socialize, and she loved singing and dancing and the arts, and took up several hobbies over the years. We are very fortunate, and hold dear, some of her artwork from those years. She also enjoyed the companionship of others in her later years at the Bow Cliff Seniors Centre, and the Good Companions Senior Centre in Calgary. She continued to take part in their art and music classes, and was a member of the Rhythm Kats. A group of musically inclined seniors that performed at different venues across Calgary. Her enthusiasm for living a full life, and her positive attitude and resilience throughout the adversities that life can bring, was a source of inspiration for her children, Julie and John. She truly understood what was important in life, and lead by example. We miss you dearly mom, but you will always be a part of us.

Norma was also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and we know she has found comfort from being reunited with her Mom and Dad, and those who have passed before her.

Special thanks to her nurse and her caregivers at the Mayfair Care Centre. Her final days under their care were some of the best days of her life. She always told us they treated her, and everyone else in the facility like royalty, and that she couldn’t be any happier if she tried. This was of great comfort for the family.

In lieu of a traditional service, the family will gather in the Spring or Summer of 2025 for an informal graveside memorial service in Stavely AB, followed by an informal gathering afterwards, most likely in Stavely. The family will communicate the details over the coming months.
