Mervin Donald Claxton

Mervin Donald Claxton, aged 90, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2026, in Calgary, Alberta. Born on January 16, 1936, in Edmonton, Alberta, Merv was the eldest child of Agnes and Charles Claxton. He was followed by his brother, Ken, and sister, Marilyn. Merv was predeceased by his only son, Douglas Claxton, in March 2022, and by his brother, Ken Claxton, in February 2026.

Merv spent his formative years in Edmonton, where he received his primary education. He later moved to Calgary to attend the University of Calgary, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. He went on to complete a second degree at the University of Washington before returning to Alberta to begin a distinguished career in radio and television broadcasting. Throughout his broadcasting career, Merv hosted numerous television programs, including Clackety Claxton, a show dedicated to model railway enthusiasts. From news anchoring and weather reporting to public service and educational programming, he explored many facets of broadcasting. His dedication and professionalism earned him numerous commendations and awards throughout his career.

In later years, Merv pursued a wide range of interests. He had a deep appreciation for horticulture, Alberta's native flora and fauna, and the province's diverse landscapes. In the early 1970s, his interests expanded to include business management, where he assisted in the grassroots formation of several Calgary-based businesses. Merv's leisure time was often spent at the family cabin on Wabamun Lake with his sister, niece, and nephew. He also enjoyed camping with friends and family near Exshaw and Seebe and spent many hours visiting friends in Canmore. These experiences led to a close connection with the Guinn family—Eva and Alvin—at Rafter Six near Seebe, where he explored the area and volunteered his expertise.

Following the sale of Rafter Six, Merv, his wife, and son followed Rick and Denise Guinn to Kananaskis, where they helped support the early development and growth of Boundary Ranch. His enthusiasm for the natural world was evident to everyone who knew him. He was a gifted storyteller, teacher, and guide, always eager to share his knowledge and curiosity with others. Most recently, Merv was involved in the formation and growth of his son Doug's IT security company, LanMaster. He provided not only moral support but also thoughtful insight and encouragement as a trusted sounding board for new ideas.

Merv lived a life marked by a love of learning, meaningful conversation, innovation, and the natural world. He leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, generosity, and a genuine appreciation for the people and places that enriched his life.

He is survived by his granddaughter, Nina Ruiz Claxton; Nina's mother, Marianna Ruiz; his sister, Marilyn Claxton of Edmonton; his niece and nephew, Stacy and Cody; and Ken's children, Murray, Bradley, and Jody. He is also survived by Kathy Claxton of British Columbia, his former wife and longtime friend.

In accordance with Merv's wishes, no service will be held.
