It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Uncle Maximo Babatugon Jr who left us on May 16, 2025 at the age of 78. To close family he was Uncle Jun or Lolo Jun in Canada, but to friends and co-workers he was simply known as Max.
Born in the Philippines in Agoho, Mambajao, Camiguin to Maximo Sr. and Sevirena Babatugon, Maximo Junior, was 6th of 10 siblings. He graduated from Southwestern University in Cebu city as a Medical Technician in 1967. In 1970 Uncle immigrated to Canada and lived in Red Deer for a few years then moved to Edmonton and finally settled in Calgary.
As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Uncle worked tirelessly to care for others. His commitment and compassionate spirit made him a beloved caregiver who was also a popular and trusted peer amongst all his co-workers.
A devout Catholic, Uncle regularly attended daily mass. He loved music and joined the choir at Holy Trinity Church and St. Francis for many years.
In 2021, Uncle successfully battled Prostate cancer. His strong faith in God helped him through this period, eventually being declared in full remission.
His commitment to God guided him in his work and daily life, inspiring those around him with his kindness and compassion.
Our Uncle had a passion for horse racing and at one time he even owned a harness racing team. Over the last few years, Uncle's normal Saturday routine would consist of Church in the morning and then spending the afternoon watching horse racing with friends.
Uncle was a cherished member of our family. He was a generous and giving person. He routinely sent money back to the Philippines to help provide for the Family as well as donating to the local Church. Uncle's life was one of humility and simplicity and he was fiercely independent. He enjoyed the simple things God had afforded him in life.
He is survived by his extended family here in Canada and in the Philippines. His legacy of compassion, dedication and giving will remain forever in our hearts.
A Funeral Mass will be held on at St. Anthony’s Church (5340 4 St SW) on Friday May 30, 2025 at 11:00am. We invite all who knew him to join us in honouring his memory. A recording of the service is available below.
May Maximo Babatugon Jr. find eternal peace, and may his spirit continue to inspire us all.
Rest in peace, Uncle Jun. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
