It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Maureen Samuel on December 6, 2024, at the age of 88. A beloved mother, nanny, sister, and aunt, Maureen passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.
Maureen was born on July 25, 1936, in Exeter, England, to Gertrude (Squire) and Eric Edger. On May 3, 1958, she married the love of her life, John Samuel, and together they shared 60 devoted years, building a beautiful life and raising their two cherished daughters, Lynn and Karen.
In 2007, John and Maureen left the lovely home they built on Kennebec Lake in Ontario to enjoy their golden years in West Kelowna, BC. Following John’s passing in 2018, Maureen moved to Calgary to live with her eldest daughter Lynn, son-in-law Doug, and her three treasured grandsons, Sam, Max, and Jack.
Maureen was a talented and creative woman. Her passion for cooking brought joy to family gatherings, and her extraordinary skills as an award-winning quilter inspired many. In 1986, Maureen fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening The Olde Silver Thimble Quilt Shoppe, with John as her most enthusiastic helper and right-hand man. Her kindness, gentle spirit, and thoughtfulness touched all who knew her, and she was happiest when surrounded by family and friends.
Maureen is survived by her loving daughters, Lynn (Doug) of Calgary and Karen of Seattle; her grandsons, Sam, Max, and Jack; her sisters Christine (David) of Bovey Tracey, England, and Pat (Graham) of Newton Abbot, England; as well as extended family in Devon, England; Alicante, Spain and Seattle, Washington. She was predeceased by her loving husband, John.
Maureen will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a kind, considerate and generous lady who brought warmth and light to the lives of those around her.
The family would like to thank the staff at Bow View Manor in Calgary for their kind and compassionate care of Maureen over the last few years. In Maureen’s memory, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada (www.alzheimers.ca) or to a charity of your choice.
