Mary Ann Doughty (nee Teed), our Mom has passed into the arms of the Lord to meet Dad once again on July 19, 2021. She was 84 years old and thought she’d die long before she did. We know this, because mother often said that if she had known she’d live this long, she would have looked after herself better.
Mom was raised in Dieppe, NB, the last of five children born of Yvonne and Russell. Mom was a bit of a tomboy, frequently following around her older brother Joe throughout her childhood. And while she loved skating and tobogganing in the winter, she also loved clamming and swimming in the summer. In her later years, Mom decided on attending Nursing School, where she never quite wrote that final exam.
When she was sent by her oldest sister Teresa to represent the family at the wedding of her sister Cecilia, Mom warned that if she made her go, she wouldn’t return home. Upon arriving in Calgary, she promptly cashed in her return ticket and got a job in the CPR telegram office. At that wedding, she met Dad, who was the Best Man. From there, she continued to work in various Nursing Aide positions, most significantly with Carewest Glenmore, where she was employed for over 35 years. During her time with Carewest, she returned to school and obtained her LPN designation.
Mom was sharp, generous, empathetic, and touched many of her patient's lives. In her later years, she would recall their names, their families, and told humorous stories of her time at the Glenmore. After her retirement, Mom enjoyed her little dog PK and her cats Lego and Boots that followed PK’s passing. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting for the kids and grandkids, watching curling, following current events, reading, and bingo. Statler and Waldorf Mom and Aunt Cec spent the last five years living together once again reflecting and railing on the state of politics, watching The Mass and Dr. Phil, all while making sure to feed Greedy Gus and his animal friends.
Mom’s favourite role was being Grandma to Mary Ann, Erica, Sheridan, Garion, Shaelynn, Bethany, Jordyn (Ali), and “The Greats”, Victoria and Olivia. She was equally adored by them and her children Karen Ann (Eric), Robert (Lee-Ann), and Christopher. She was the “Favourite Aunt” to her many nieces and nephews. We will miss our talks and her “Mom” jokes, and we will forever be amazed at how she remembered all the words and never screwed up the punch line. She was our rock, our shoulder to cry on, and our soft place to land. Mom supported us all through the highs and the lows, and we tried to give back equally to her, even if it was only in hamburgers. Mom was predeceased our Dad Bob, and her brothers Joseph and Patrick. Dad’s waiting for Mom to join him with the ashes of her beloved animals at Queen’s Park Cemetery in the Field of Honour which will happen at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Mom asked that donations be made in her memory to the Calgary Humane Society (4455 110th Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta, T2C 2T7 https://www.calgaryhumane.ca/donate/).
