Marjorie Clair Stanhope (nee Postlethwaite)
Born August 1, 1938, Liverpool, England; Passed Away November 17, 2025, Calgary AB.
It is with great sadness that the Stanhope and Norris families announce the passing of Marjorie Clair Stanhope at the age of 87.
Marjorie’s passion for music had her singing at a young age, leaving home at 16 and starting a lifelong career as the vocalist, “Jeannie Munro”. She performed with big bands and greats, Stan Kenton, and Leon Sait, in both the UK and Canada. Audiences around the globe were treated to her voice on BBC and CBC radio and television.
Marjorie met her first husband, Brian Stanhope, a pianist, and composer, in the 60’s during the height of swing and big band music. The couple emigrated to Canada with their two sons in 1968. Settling in Vancouver, they formed various bands and performed together for many years in clubs, dance halls, on cruise ships, and in Palm Springs venues.
Following the loss of each of their spouses, it was in Palm Springs where Marjorie met the second love of her life, Tom Norris. Marjorie and Tom married in 2013 and lived an active lifestyle in Calgary, especially enjoying long walks together. Sharing a love of music and warm climes, they spent their winters in Palm Springs where “Jeannie” sang regularly with jazz and big bands.
In later years, as Marjorie’s health declined due to Parkinson disease and dementia, the couple remained in Calgary with Tom at her side, loving her, caring for her, and helping her enjoy life to the fullest. Although Marjorie no longer performed, she sang along with the CD’s Tom played for her every day, and she never missed a word.
Marjorie had a soft spot for animals and was a generous contributor to many charitable organizations. Her kindness and talent will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Marjorie is survived by her devoted husband, Thomas Norris, her two sons, Bob (Jackie) and Dave (Fiona) Stanhope, her seven stepchildren, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother, William, and sister, Doreen, and will be missed by her brother, Jimmy (Sheila) in the UK, and several nieces and nephews.
The families sincerely thank Dr. Christopher Morse and both the Holy Cross Manor and Dulcina Hospice care teams for their exceptional care of Marjorie.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church (541 Silvergrove Drive NW) on Friday, November 28 at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Parkinson Association of Alberta or to the St. Marguerite Manor & Dulcina Hospice - Covenant Foundation.
