With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Lottie McAthey on September 20, 2025. Lottie was our cherished mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was born Lieselotte Renate Mader in Glauchau, Germany, on January 28, 1935. With immense courage and determination, she immigrated to Canada in 1955 hitchhiking solo across the country where she settled in Whitehorse, Yukon. Lottie was exceptionally beautiful and sharply intelligent, she taught herself English with only a hand dictionary, started building a new life and married Wallace Gerald Wing. Many moves took her across the country eventually settling in British Columbia and Alberta for most of her life. She was her own person, taking a keen interest in world affairs and history. She had an infectious laugh and a talent for cooking, sewing, knitting special gifts and decorating which we all admired and benefitted from.
She is survived by her six children: Eva Marie Kaminsky, Stuart James Wing, Elizabeth Suzanne Swen, Catherine Anne Mahoney, Susan Jennifer Lim (Darryl), and Barbara Ellen Brown (Murray). She was a blessed grandmother to Robert, Tyrell, Lesley, Jamie-Lynn, Christopher, Jennifer, Ava, Dexter, Lewis, Riley and a great-grandmother to Qiara, Jhai, Jairen, Kamryn and Alexander.
Lottie will be remembered as a woman of contrasts, complicated yet tender, fragile yet incredibly strong. Though life brought her struggles, she carried them with resilience and courage that inspired us all. Her love and lessons will forever remain.
Rest peacefully, Lieselotte. You will always be close by in our hearts.
