It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Leona Alberta Marilyn Hogge, who peacefully passed away on October 23, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born and raised in the Calgary area, Leona was the cherished daughter of Walter Kenneth Birney (November 17, 1910 – September 4, 1982) and Ruth Ilene Beatrice Shaw (December 4, 1911 – February 3, 1975). She was blessed with multiple brothers and sisters, and her life was enriched by her nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Leona was the proud and devoted mother of Norman (Leah), Gene, and Randy, and a loving grandmother to Kendra (Dusty), Colton, Morgan-Leigh, Britney (Cory), Darian (Kyra), Dylan and Ashley (Braden). Her joy extended to her seven great-grandchildren Skyelir, Weston, Jhett, Embir, Tripp, Evalina and Brynlee, who were the light of her later years.
Throughout her life, Leona was the cornerstone of her family, a steady and unwavering presence who dedicated herself fully to the success and happiness of those she loved. Her commitment, love, and warmth touched everyone around her and will continue to resonate through the generations she nurtured.
Leona will be remembered for her boundless devotion, her kindness, and the strength she gave her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering family values that will endure forever.
Family was important. From her sons to her grandchildren to great-grandchildren. She raised her 3 sons with love, kindness and generosity. She loved spoiling her grandkids when they were young with handmade projects. Which eventually turned into knitting dolly blankets, car seat covers, pillows and blankets for her great-grandchildren. Any chance she could get she would show off her grand babies - and grand babies’ babies. Whether that be to randoms on their outings or her friends at Black Diamond Lodge. At the lodge she enjoyed playing crib, bingo or doing puzzles with her newfound friends. She was nothing short of amazing. She loved to attend family reunion gatherings to catch up with her siblings, nieces and nephews - and another reason to show off her lineage. Many memories in her later years were spent with Kendra (Jhett, Tripp), Britney (Skye, Embir) and Ashley (Brynlee).
Leona to some but to her most important people she was Nana, a name she wore proudly. She hated to bother others but liked to be bothered herself, especially if it had to do with the little children in her life or Sports.
When you visited Nana you could guarantee the sports channel was on, usually hockey, baseball or football but you could also find her watching even curling and golf, if that doesn’t tell you how patient she was, I don’t know what will. She loved her Flames and Blue Jays, but also loved to watch curling and chucks, and if the chuck races weren’t on TV you bet she would be listening to them over the radio.
Old Lady, AKA Nana
Ashley and her always joked about being an old lady and she would always scoff with a big smile on her face and say “whatever” in her Nana like tone. We remember all the good times with her like they were yesterday, and now they will always be engraved in our head. She always said, “the grumpy ones live the longest, but I don’t wanna live the longest, so I guess I have to stop being grumpy”, I’d say 91 years is pretty long for an amazing lady like she was.
The first-time meeting Brynlee, Ashley surprised her with a visit at the lodge and she was almost in tears when she opened the door. Nana loved her family no matter what it came to, and we will always cherish her unconditional love that she had for us. She was our biggest support and our biggest voice of reason. We will forever cherish the memories we have with her of shopping, watching hockey, playing crib, doing puzzles, or just sitting on the couch listening to the cowboy music channel.
We will miss her more than she could ever know.
You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide, although we cannot see you, you’re always at our side.
A private family celebration of her life will be held. Those wishing to honor Leona’s memory are encouraged to cherish their loved ones and carry forward the spirit of care and commitment that defined her life.
