The world is a little less wonderful as we share the passing of Bernie (Leo Bernard Pop) Dougherty on Wednesday September 17, 2025, at the age of 92 years. Bernie passed away as peacefully as anyone could hope, with family visits, storytelling, laughter and holding hands.
Bernie was born on November 24, 1932, in Drumheller, Alberta. And grew up in the town of Morrin with his Mom Lovina, Dad Murray, Sister Laura and Brother Leonard, all predeceased.
Bernie grew up with a little girl, named JoAnne, who lived right across the street and on December 13, 1958, they married and raised a family in Calgary. JoAnne passed away in March 2024 and didn’t have to wait too long to be reunited with dad.
Their children Murray (Leny), Patti (Paul), Jodene (Scott) and Robert (Suzanne); grandchildren Kailyn (Danny), Zachary (Carrie), Benjamin (Kaitlyn), Dylan, Ryan, Carleigh (Jacob), Noah (Paige); great grandchildren Evelynn, Alexander and Emma are blessed to have had such a wonderful Dad, Pop and G-Pop. Bernie lived an adventurous and small-town life. He was an amazing storyteller who never forgot a detail and always left you laughing. When he graduated from school in Morrin, he started working for the town bank as a teller. He went on to travel the world working for Photogravity Geographical Surveys, then to work with our province’s agriculture community selling Massey Ferguson farm equipment and finally worked for and retired from Green Drop Lawns. Where-ever he worked and whatever the work he did, he was proud of hard work, integrity and building impactful relationships that meant something to everyone who knew him. Bernie’s travels took him to Scotland, Ireland, Chile, Portugal, Spain, Austria, Bolivia, Germany, Arctic, Netherlands, Paris and more but nothing was more important for him than being home with family. He was an inspiring example of what it means to be a son, husband, father, pop (grandfather and great grandfather), brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He loved playing cards, camping, hunting, travelling, curling, Blue Jays and Flames and most recently building amazing miniature dioramas and Wednesday Bingo at St. Theresa Place where he found a whole new place to belong and be cared for.
The family extends its appreciation to everyone who loved and cared for our dad throughout his golden years and celebrate that mom and dad are now together in heaven shuffling the cards and gathering family and friends for a game of Chase the Ace.
