Laurie Gates

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Laurie Gates at age 53.

Laurie grew up in Camrose, Alberta, the youngest of five children. As the baby of the family, she was lovingly doted on. She was especially devoted to her mom and dad, and to Laurie, our stepfather Al was always ‘Dad.’ From him she received the family’s affectionate nickname, ‘Weech,’ which she carried throughout her life.

After high school, Laurie worked as a server before beginning a career with WestJet as a flight attendant. She loved sharing the many hilarious anecdotes from her years of flying.

Laurie’s fun-loving humor often brought laughter, even in challenging moments. She delighted in lightheartedness and silliness. She also loved animals and found companionship and comfort in them, and she took pride in her time volunteering at the Calgary Humane Society. Above all, Laurie’s greatest joy and deepest love was her daughter, Jenna, who remained the center of her world. Even as she faced struggles in her later years, Laurie never stopped carrying her daughter in her heart.

Laurie is survived by her daughter, Jenna; her siblings Rick (Shannon), Tammy (Kevin) and Duane; her nieces and nephews; and all those who knew and cared for her.
