Joy Lynn Cooney

Joy Lynn Anne Cooney, 61, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones in the early hours of August 23, 2024.

Born March 13, 1963, to Donald and Joan (Cottrell) Cooney of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Joy was aptly named. She loved to laugh and did it often; her unique ability to find humour in the unexpected brought smiles to all who knew her. She was dynamic; assertive and stalwart, open-minded and gentle, headstrong and compassionate. The family moved to Calgary circa 1975. Joy enjoyed travelling early in life; two of her favourite destinations were Hawaii and Las Vegas. However, her greatest adventure began in 1989 with the birth of her daughter, Christina.  

Joy worked as a manager and district manager at Bentley Leathers for 17 years (1997-2014). Joy was beloved by those who worked with her, thanks to her strong work ethic, knowledge, and personable demeanor.  Joy made people feel welcome, and spending time with friends and loved ones was important and prioritized. Joy made ordinary moments memorable; Christina fondly recalls time with her mom wandering the aisles of department stores, watching TLC and Food Network, and their 'fancy' nights out for dinner and a movie. Every moment with Joy was one well spent and full of love.

Her passion for people, unconditional kindness, love of travel, and exuberant personality were in harmony with Joy’s volunteer work with Dream Take Flight. Joy participated in many fundraisers and fondly shared memories of accompanying children to Disneyland. At the end of her life, Joy talked about going to Disney World and taking a Disney Cruise.

Joy was pre-deceased by her mother, Joan, in 2008. She is survived by her daughter, Christina (Jason);  father, Donald (Nadine); and brother James (Pattrapan).  

When remembering Joy, do not dwell in the sadness of her passing, but immerse yourself in the joy of her kindness, caring, and excitement to live life up to the very last second.
