Jonathan Durnford Obituary

It is with profound shock and sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved son and brother Jonathan Alexander Durnford on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at the age of 36 years old.

“JD” as he was lovingly known was a quiet, private man with the heart and demeanor of a huge teddy bear. He enjoyed downtime spent with his family and friends as well as a game of basketball with his three nephews. Jonathan first worked as a diesel mechanic in Calgary for several years until he obtained his Journeyman’s electrical certification which he practiced until his passing. He enjoyed a good home-cooked meal and a glass of wine. Jonathan was extremely interested and engaged in any and all conversations about the world. He loved chatting about history, geography, and politics. He appreciated music and learning about all his favorite artists. Jonathan could recite what the weather was like when a certain favorite album was recorded. His knowledge retention was second to none.

Always ready and willing to help, he would volunteer when any projects required that extra support. Jonathan had more patience than most and was generally given those tasks that take the extra effort. He always did it with a smile and never complained. Often letting one of his nephews “help” in the tasks which would take twice as long, but he did it with a smile taking the time to explain how “things” worked. Jonathan appreciated his walks around the parks in Calgary and recently started to venture on long hikes in the nearby mountains. He lived a very simple life and enjoyed the simpler things in it.

Jonathan is survived by his parents, John and Bernice Durnford (Burgeo, NF); his brother Dennis and wife Sidonie (Calgary); along with three heartbroken nephews, Ben, Bastian, and Kallan. Alongside countless friends and family, including Aunts, Uncles, Cousins as well as his extended Work-Family at Dynamic Furniture. Jonathan was taken from us all too soon.

We are all better for knowing him in the time we shared although much too short. The world was a better place with him in it. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by everyone that knew him.

There will be an opportunity for his Alberta family to say their farewell on Saturday, November 27th, 2021 from 1-4 pm at Dennis and Sidonie’s residence (contact Dennis or Sidonie for directions). Jonathan will then travel back to Burgeo where there will be a service held at a later date and where he will find his final resting place. Please drop by to share a story and help us in celebrating Jonathan’s life.
