Joan Mackay Obituary

Joan Mackay - 81, of Calgary, Alberta, went home peacefully to the God she loved on Monday, January 23, 2023. Born April 19, 1941, in Wakefield, England, Joan was the daughter of the late Samuel Edward and Beatrice Bessant.

She immigrated to Canada in 1952 with her family. She married the love of her life, Donald (Don) Alexander Mackay June 27, 1958. Joan and Don always worked and played well together as a team. They owned their own resort at Batchawana Bay, Ontario on Lake Superior for a number of years. They both worked in real estate in Sudbury, Elliott Lake, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and in 1987 moved out west to Calgary, Alberta where they owned and operated two Massage Therapy Clinics until they retired. They played for years together on dart teams all over the city.

Joan is survived by her children, Rhonda Marie McDermitt and Roderick (Rod) MacKay (wife - AnnMarie); sisters Jackie (husband - Mike) and Jennifer Massicotte (husband - Ernie); grandchildren Matthew and Melissa, five great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews along with great nieces and nephews too many to name. Joan is predeceased by her husband, Donald, and brother David Edward Bessant.

Joan had a great love for music, singing in her church choir, and playing guitar, tambourine, and trombone in the church band. She also played in the Westwinds Band and a Caribbean band. She loved to dance to the oldies, disco, Caribbean, and belly dancing (to keep in shape). She loved yoga to the point of becoming an instructor.

She will be truly missed by her family and friends.
