Jean Ross Obituary

Jean Ross (nee Dickison) passed away at Carewest Colonel Belcher in Calgary, AB on September 1, 2021 in her 97th year. She was the beloved wife of Elmor Ross for 72 years, dearly loved mother to Anne Stephenson (Grant) of Calgary, Allan Ross (Patrice) of Picton, ON and Mary Ellen Ross (Erin) of Burlington, ON. She was a wonderful grandmother to Ben (Flora), Aaron (Hanna), Matthew (Michelle), Scott (Katie) and Daniel and special great-grandma to Henry, James, Jonathan, Margaret, Andrew and Axel. Jean was pre-deceased by her parents, William and Nellie Dickison, and her siblings, Mary, Gordon, and Alice. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Dickison, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jean and Elmor grew up in the Teeswater, ON area. They lived in Teeswater for many years and moves to Kincardine and London followed. In later years, they moved to Calgary to be closer to family. Through the years, they have always maintained a strong interest and connection to their hometown of Teeswater. Jean attended normal school in Stratford and became a teacher, first at Glennanon School and then at SS #2 in Culross Township. In later years she worked as a volunteer teaching English as a second language and assisting adults in upgrading their education.

Jean was an avid quilter and made many beautiful quilts which her family will continue to enjoy for years to come. Jean was also very interested in genealogy and researched family history both in Canada and in Europe. She and Elmor travelled widely and thoroughly enjoyed the people and places they came to know through their travels. They particularly enjoyed visiting Holland, Britain and Rarotonga and returned whenever they could. However, we often heard that nothing they saw could compare to a Lake Huron sunset at Kincardine.

Jean was very interested in the world around her and she and Elmor felt that clean water was essential to everyone. To that end, they arranged to have a well drilled in Ethiopia to provide a town with drinking water. Her other passion was an organization called Sleeping Children Around the World. The grandchildren always received a picture on the Christmas tree of a child who had received a bed kit in the grandchild’s name.
