Guiying Yang Obituary

Guiying was born on February 8, 1936, in Tangshan, China, to parents who were successful fishing boat owners. She was the third of seven children. Growing up in 1950s China, Guiying was driven and ambitious, seeking more out of life. She followed her dreams to Beijing, where she graduated from Beijing Normal University Affiliated Girls’ High School and later pursued her studies in Materials Engineering at Beijing Machinery Manufacturing College. After graduating in 1957 with a degree in metallurgical technology, she began her lifelong career at Shanghai Jiaotong University, and later, from 1958 to 1991, at Xian Jiaotong University.

In 1961, she met Meitong, and they married in 1962. Together, they had two children: Jim and Dexter. In 1993, Guiying and Meitong immigrated to Calgary, Canada.

At home, Guiying took on the roles of decision-maker and caretaker, skillfully balancing the responsibilities of raising two boys while excelling in her career. She cherished her husband, two sons, daughters-in-law, and granddaughter deeply. In the final years of her life, old age dementia took away Guiying’s ability to speak. However, the bond she shared with each of her loved ones will remain unbroken.

In the early morning of September 9, 2024, Guiying passed away peacefully at the Rockyview General Hospital.

A Burial Service for Guiying will be held in early spring 2025 in Calgary, Canada.

Guiying is survived by her devoted husband Meitong, with whom she celebrated 62 years of marriage, and their two children: Jim (Sherry) and Dexter (Tingting). She is also lovingly remembered by her granddaughter Wayeesha (Chris), grandniece Carrie (Josh), and nephews and nieces, Tao (Li), Wei (Zhuofei), Zhaosheng (Lu), Zhiqing (Yan), Hong (Baijun), Dan (Yinggang), Qing, Fang and Dong.  Guiying is further survived by her sister Guilan (Weiyu), brothers Yupei and Yuxiao (Xiurong).
