Gerald Newman Obituary

It is with sadness that the family of Jerry Newman announces his sudden passing on Friday, November 3, 2023, at the age of 68 years.

Jerry will be missed by his wife of 36 years Jill (née Trotman); children, Joel (Alanna), and Jennifer (Sebastien); grandson Everett; nephews, Cory, and Shaun (Carla); great-niece Jayde; and great-nephews Caidan and Andrew.

He was predeceased by his parents, Esther and Norman; sister Glenda; and brothers, John, and Norman.

Jerry was born on August 27, 1955, in Calgary, Alberta. He was the beloved middle child who could do no wrong in the eyes of his mom. His dad showed his love by showing up to all of Jerry’s hockey and baseball games. Jerry grew up as an army brat posted mainly in Calgary but lived in Kingston, Ontario, for his junior high years. Jerry met Jill at the 1983 Calgary Stampede, just before spending a year traveling on his Honda Goldwing motorcycle in California. Jerry returned to Calgary and his feelings for Jill encouraged him to stay and begin working for Radio Shack Repairs. When he was transferred to manage the Dartmouth N.S. repair depot in 1987, Jill and Jerry quickly got married and began their adventures together.  Their daughter was born in Halifax and the family returned to Calgary in 1990, two years before the birth of their son Joel. Jerry worked at Southern Music as the service manager and then with AGLC as an electronic technician in the casinos.

Jerry had many good friends that shared his love of sports, travel, and cards.  His friends from high school gather yearly to travel and stay connected. Jill’s guy friends from high school also adopted him into their golf and poker games. He made friends easily and enjoyed starting up a conversation with the people he encountered. Jerry was an avid golfer and loved playing, watching, and supporting hockey. He supported Joel’s sports teams whenever possible as assistant coach or manager. Jerry loved to read and waited anxiously for each newly released Stephen King book. He loved playing the stock market and was passionate about financial planning; he would share his knowledge and ideas with anyone that would listen. Jerry was a proud and generous dad. He was learning to be an amazing Grandpa, imparting his love of reading and television with Everett.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Scarboro United Church (134 Scarboro Ave SW, Calgary) on Friday, November 17, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully appreciated to Scarboro United Church or a different charity of your choice.
