George 'Bert' Adkin Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bert Adkin, who died on November 13th at the age of 67.  Bert was a beloved Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle, mentor and friend to many.  Bert lived by… it’s not what you have but what you give.

Born in Victoria, BC, his family then settled in Calgary, Alberta.  Bert lived a life full of love, kindness, and dedication.  Bert was a beautiful contradiction of Tattoos and Pedicures, and we loved him for that…

Bert pursued his education at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).After attending SAIT, Bert spent most of his working years on sheet metal projects throughout Alberta, ranging from the Bow Building in downtown Calgary to the Science Commons in Lethbridge.

Bert spent his younger years motorcycling across North America.  He decided once he met his “bride” Laurie he was ready to start the next chapter of his life.  Bert & Laurie got married in Vegas in a “Schmengy Wedding” October 3, 1998, with family & friends including Elvis who performed.

Once they settled in Langdon, they made a decision to adopt, as Bert said he wanted to make a difference in a child’s life, and he did.

Laurie and Bert adopted Royal Riel and Francesca Nicole in 2004.  Bert decided to retire his Harley Davidson for family life.  Bert used the money from selling “Barney”, his purple Harley, to take his new family to Disneyland.

Bert was known for his love of golf and in his words “Fashion is important” and he didn’t disappoint with his many colourful Loudmouth and Knicker outfits.  Bert loved to golf. He parred the “Road Hole” in St. Andrews on a Trip to Scotland with one of his closest friends Clay.  Bert spotted the untapped talent of his son Riel where he made sure that Riel honed his skills and actually ended up surpassing his dad plus most men, which made Bert so proud.

Bert was an avid Steelers fan and enjoyed taking time every Sunday for “Church” to watch Football. He was leading his fantasy league football league at the time of his passing.

He played many other sports such as Hockey, Baseball and Volleyball. It was playing volleyball where he met a lot of his lifetime friends playing at Tiebreakers Lounge.

Bert also loved movies and shared this with both his children.  When Nikki was younger and was watching all the dance movies, he would sit beside her and watch every one of them with her and became a huge fan.  Their love of “Minions” was something that they both shared and they couldn’t wait for the next movie to come out.

Throughout his life, Bert made a positive impact on the lives of others through his kindness and compassion.  At home he was famous for his valuable advice i.e. “Adkin’s lead they don’t follow” or “Everyone makes a mistake what’s important is learning from it.”

He was referred to as a “Stand Up” guy, a brother, a friend and a mentor, and a second Dad.

There will be a celebration of life “Schmengy” style in the spring.  Details will be shared closer to the time.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the support and love during this difficult time.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He will forever be in our hearts
