Fred James Hill died on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 in Calgary, AB at the age of 83 years. Fred was born on the family farm near Pleasantdale, SK, the fifth of seven children of Alfred and Edith Hill. When he was twenty, Fred met the love of his life, Yvonne Dasnieres. Yvonne was cooking and serving up meals in the Kamloops, BC boarding house where Fred was living at the time. It was love at first sight! They were married in 1960 and had four children: Lorraine, Warren, Corinne, and Darryl.
Fred’s career as a plumber began in Saskatchewan when he and his brother Don joined forces to work together. In 1971 Fred and Yvonne moved their family to Calgary where Fred established a successful plumbing company with Yvonne managing the day to day business.
Fred was a family man, and this included his extended family. He loved family celebrations and holidays, as well as everyday life together. He relaxed into summer family vacations up at Seymour Arm on Shuswap Lake, BC. He and Yvonne enjoyed camping and traveling, with lots of holidaying in British Columbia, visits to (and from) their Saskatchewan people, as well as trips to the Northwest Territories, Alaska, England, and Mexico. Fred regularly spent time with his close friends and neighbors, socializing or working on one project or another. In recent years, he and Yvonne were keen to be actively involved with their kids’ renovations and housing projects, from planning, to demolition, raising walls, laying sod, etc.
Fred liked to hunt but he LOVED to fish! As often as he could, he’d take whoever was willing to go. He loved the big BC fishing trips but he was also keen on the day trips closer to home. Over the last decade or so, we were out to Crawling Valley or Chain Lakes with Fred as often as possible, winter and summer, spring and fall. This was his favorite activity so he was always game to go. There will be many opportunities to keep Fred’s memory alive as we fish his favorite spots in years to come!
Fred is survived by his wife Yvonne and their four children: Lorraine Hill (Pete), Warren Hill (Lisa), Corinne MacKenzie, and Darryl Hill (Janice), as well as their six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Fred is also survived by his sister Gladys Schulz (Pete); his brother Kenneth Hill (Trish); his brother-in-law Pete Dasnieres (Marilyn); his sister-in-law Phyllis Bozykowski; as well as many nieces and nephews and close friends. He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters (Winnie and Ethel), and two brothers (Stanley and Donald.)
There will be no service at this time. If desired, charitable donations in Fred’s memory may be made to The Brenda Strafford Foundation, Clifton Manor, 4726 8th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB T2A 0A8, or to a charity of your choice.
