Frank 'Kent' Smid Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kent Smid (Frank Kenneth) of Calgary, Alberta. Kent passed away at the Rockyview General Hospital on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at the age of 69, with his daughters by his side.

Kent was the third child of John and Dorthy Smid, was born in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan and raised in Calgary, Alberta. Kent’s roots were always in Saskatchewan, and he moved back to Shaunavon after graduating from Queen Elizabeth High School in Calgary. In Shaunavon, he completed his mechanic apprenticeship and met his wife, Wendy Smid (nee Pritchard).

After a short stop back in Calgary, Wendy and Kent moved to Medicine Hat where they raised their daughters, Renée and Kendra. During that time, Kent was proud of his mobile mechanic business, K & W Mobile. Kent, Wendy and the girls enjoyed time water skiing and camping in the summers and their road trip memories will always be cherished. As they drove from Medicine Hat south, Kent made sure his daughters could sing every Alabama album from start to finish.

Kent had a great sense of adventure. After he and Wendy went their separate ways, he worked in many places around the world. He was fascinated by seeing mechanics and engineering at work and loved to tell stories about his travels. From offshore drilling rigs in the Shetland Islands to Ice Roads north of Tuktouktuk, Kent loved a story. Kent’s other interests include hunting, fishing and visiting his extended family. He always said, ‘sure’ to a good time and wouldn’t miss an opportunity to two-step or polka.

In his later years, Kent’s life came full circle and he and his brother Bob ended up as roommates, again. Kent cherished those years playing crib with Bob and getting to know Bob’s children as adults.

Despite his health challenges, Kent worked hard to spend time enjoying his grandkids, Willem, Evangaline, Thea and Nellee. He loved playdates and trips to the swimming pool with Nellee and made sure she had a new pair of cowgirl boots each birthday. He cheered at many basketball games and even made trips to Panorama to boat and ski with Willem, Evangaline and Thea.

Kent leaves to mourn his children, Renée (Michael), and Kendra (Darren); grandchildren, Willem, Evangaline, Thea and Nellee; siblings, Ivy (Howard), and Sue (Kevin); and his amazing nieces, nephews, cousins and friends around the world.

Right to his final moments Kent’s amazing sense of humour was adored. He left the Rockyview Hospital with the staff floored by his unbelievable independence and laughing at his hilarious commentary. Dad, we truly believe you will be missed more than you will ever know. We love you, Dad…Roll on.
