With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Evonne (Maertens) Hawke, who left us peacefully on January 18, 2025, at the age of 81.
Evonne was born on August 23, 1943, in St Boniface Manitoba to Clara and Leon Maertens. Evonne grew up in Thunder Bay Ontario where she met and married her husband of 62 years Edward Hawke. They were blessed with 2 daughters while living in Thunder Bay and after moving the family to Calgary they were blessed with another daughter.
Throughout her life, she was a beacon of love, and strength. As a mother, she was the heart of our family, always providing support, guidance, and love. Above all, she adored her children and grandchildren, finding great joy in spending time with them and watching them grow. Sunday dinners were a tradition in the family for most of the years the grandchildren were growing up. Family meant everything to her, and she cherished every moment spent with loved ones.
In addition to being a devoted mother, Evonne had a deep passion for gardening, and her green thumb could nurse any plant back to life. Evonne was so proud when people walking past stopped and admired her beautiful yard. She loved crocheting and knitting, often creating beautiful gifts for her family. Evonne was never afraid to tackle any project with her home and she taught herself how to drywall and tape, as well as stipple ceilings long before you tube or home renovation channels were around.
Known for her wonderful sense of humour, she could always bring a smile to anyone’s face with her quick wit and infectious laughter.
Mom and dad enjoyed yearly trips to Vegas for some 25-cent video poker gambling, to enjoy the buffets and especially partake in some shopping. Trips with her children and grandkids were the best trips of all. The grandchildren fought over who got to ride Space Mountain with grandma because her screaming brought much more to the ride. Her love of travel, laughter, and adventure was contagious, and her zest for life will be remembered by all who shared those special moments with her. None of our birthday celebrations will ever be the same without mom’s special birthday song sung as off key as she possibly could.
Evonne is survived by her husband Edward Hawke, her three daughters Debbie Doherty, Lori Pumphrey ( Brian) and Shelley Sebelius (Parnell). She is also survived by her 9 grandchildren Michael Doherty, Kevin Doherty, Brad Boivin, Nicole Boivin, Sean Doherty, Brayden Sebelius, Carissa Sebelius, Makayla Sebelius, and Cassandra Pumphrey. She is also survived by 4 great grandchildren, Jackson Lucuik, Caelyn Doherty, Logan Luciuk and Cillian Doherty. She is also survived by 3 of her siblings: Ronald Maertens, Elizabeth Lipowy and Linda (Jerry) Salmela.
In accordance with Evonne’s wishes, there will be no service. However, if you wish donations can be made in her memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
Rest in peace, Mom. You will forever be in our hearts and dearly missed.
