Erika was born on July 4, 1941, in Bonn, Germany, during the Second World War, in a hospital elevator, while evacuating to the basement.
She is predeceased by her husband, Donald Leroy Lang, and her brothers, Heinz and Herbert Peters. She is survived by her daughter, Yvonne Lang; her son, Michael Lang (Yolande); grandson, Collin Frerichs (Andrea); and great-grandchildren, Abigail and Carter Frerichs. Erika is also survived by family in Germany, her sister, Tina Pearman; nephew, James Herbert; and nieces, Miriam Peters and Rebecca Peters.
Erika, with her 2 children, immigrated to Canada around 1966, following the accidental death of her husband Donald (1938-1964) just outside Medicine Hat, Alberta. Donald served in the Canadian Army and was honorably discharged in 1964. Erika never remarried and raised her two children on her own, living in Calgary until her passing.
Erika worked for Alberta Social Services for over 35 years and worked part-time at Stampede Park for over 20 years. In her personal life, she adopted three cats (Poopsi, Shadow, and Teddy) and had a great and enduring love for all animals. She would often be found walking neighbourhood dogs, feeding the birds daily from her backyard, and treating the neighbourhood cats. Erika also volunteered during the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, the Olympic Hall of Fame at COP, and the Blues Festival.
Our family would like to thank everyone for their love and support during this difficult time. Your warm thoughts are appreciated and heartfelt. We would also like to extend a big thank you to Evan J. Strong Funeral Home for their comfort and guidance.
At Erika’s request, there will be no funeral service or celebration of life. The family will be holding a small gathering at a later date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, if so desired, you may donate to Erika’s charity of choice the Meow Foundation at https://meowfoundation.com/.
