Surrounded by the love of his family, Douglas died peacefully at the age of 82 after an extended stay in Rockyview Hospital in Calgary from multiple age-related frailties.
He was a dearly loved husband, father, brother, “Pumpa” (grandpa), uncle and friend. Doug has left to grieve his passing his wife Lynnda, daughter Sloane (Mitch), step-sons Ean (Danica) & Ryan, brother David (Anne) & sister Bev, grandchildren Leighton, Calvin, Marshall, Dakota & Lachlan, in addition to nieces Nicole & Kim, & nephews Tylor & Jason. Doug was predeceased by his parents Thelma (2004) and Harry (2001) and son Chris (1999).
Born in Jamaica and raised in the tropics for the first 6 years of his life, Doug then settled onto the west coast of BC with his family upon returning to Canada. In 1969, he married his first wife, Sara Hunter and together, they moved to Ontario to complete his Optometry degree at the University of Waterloo. Upon graduating in 1972, they soon relocated to Edmonton to start their family and the beginnings of a fruitful 45-year career as an Optometrist in the downtown core of Edmonton.
He truly loved his work and the people he helped. The feeling was mutual, as patients and colleagues often described him as always light-hearted, kind and friendly. He was an avid outdoorsman, which would often include a tent, his canoe, fishing rod or dirt bike. He also spent countless years hiking, skiing or mountain biking amongst the Rockies with family. He was always a dedicated, hands-on father and always showed his kids unconditional love, even through the “trying youth years”. He was a strong community member of Grandview Heights, often volunteering his time to coach youth basketball or umpire little league baseball and served on the Board of Directors for both Derrick Club & Rotary Club of Edmonton.
In his later years, he took to ballroom dancing, golf, yoga, watercolour painting and multiple activities with South East Edmonton Seniors Association. The biggest heartbreak of his life was losing his son Chris tragically to a climbing accident in Canmore at the age of 24. Through this tragedy, he turned his grief into a thriving fund for youth to enjoy the outdoors with Outward Bound Canada.
Doug remarried in 2011 to his beloved companion and dance partner Lynnda Sharp on the quiet beaches of Hawaii. For many of their 25 years together, they created wonderful memories dancing, practicing yoga & travelling to exotic destinations. We will all miss his happy-go-lucky sense of humour, friendship and his appreciation for the simple joys in life.
A Celebration of Life will be at the Derrick Golf & Winter Club (3500 119 St NW) on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at 1:00 pm. Please join us to remember Douglas as we share memories together. RSVP to https://douglashunteracelebration.rsvpify.com
