Douglas Alan Potter Obituary

With sadness we announce Douglas Alan Potter passed away suddenly in Calgary on October 18, 2025.

Doug was predeceased by his parents Herb and Muriel Potter, and his brother Lynn.

Loving husband of José and father of Grant, Scottie, Erika and Krow. As well as their partners Courtney, Daryn, Laura and Lukas. He will be fondly remembered by José’s brothers, Robert and Harold and their families.

Doug was born into the car business and followed in his father’s footsteps and became a mechanic. He spent his early years helping his parents at Potters Shell and Hobby in northwest Calgary.  His passion for football started early, with Muriel and Doug attending many Stampeders’ games.

Doug and José met in 1980 and married in 1984. José was the love of Doug’s life. His love and support of José was beyond compare. He was José’s rock.

In the early years Doug and José loved to camp and ski, they were even members of a stock car crew. Motorcycling became a big part of their lives and Doug was proud to be an instructor for Canada Safety Council.

The most important part of Doug’s life were his children, and he showed up for them in the most meaningful ways as their confidant, teacher, and friend. The true definition of unconditional love.

Doug became a devoted student of Kyokushin Karate in 2001. Earning his Shodan in 2011 and Nidan in 2022. The Kyokushin Family is a vital part of our lives.

Doug worked at Jack Carter Chev Olds for years and we are still a part of the Carter Family today. He continued working in the car business until his retirement in 2024.

And we cannot mention Doug without the word TRAINS. His father was an original member of Calgary Model Trainmen and passed on this passion to Doug. Doug loved all aspects of the hobby – photography, model building, layout design and scenery. His dream layout was underway.

Doug walked gently through his life with character, humility and a kind heart. Forever the eternal optimist. His wit beamed through his humor, the best puns aka “Potterisms” ever. He was admired and respected in all aspects of his life. The essence of Doug is indescribable.

We will all miss him. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Carriage House Hotel (9030 Macleod Trail SE, Calgary) on October 27, 2025, at 1:00pm.

Feel free to wear blue, a football jersey or anything that makes you feel connected to Doug.

As Doug loved all cats, if you so desire donations can be made to the Calgary Humane Society.
