Douglas Fraser Obituary

Dad, Douglas Lorne Fraser, born October 6, 1934, you grew up on the prairies, with four brothers. You spent 7 years achieving your higher education in several fields, from, Education, to Nursing to Engineering. It was your love of learning that made you such a wonderful conversationalist and a man of many words.

But then a sad darkness overcame you. The path you were on detoured you terribly, and the darkness continued to follow you until one day you met Mom. Your life changed once again, and two little girls came into your world. You fought that darkness to be the best Dad.

Despite the love we had for you, loneliness still crept in, but you always found the strength to come back. When that darkness would clear, you brought your very best and all your love with you. We shared so many laughs and jokes, many would groan, but we understood each other through it all, and laughed until we had tears in our eyes.

Through the years you displayed amazing strength by sharing your story with many, helping people to face their own darkness. Your courage and compassion were recognized when you received an Award from the Canadian Mental Health Association for your efforts. As years went on, and we learned more, your darkness still loomed, but you took control and life took on new meaning.

The years went by, slowly we could see you were ready to go. To our surprise, you still fought, but on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, you finally beat the battle of the dark. Although cancer took you from us, we, your family, are so very proud of you Dad, you fought your 89 years so very hard, with resilience, courage, determination, and love. Dad, despite it all, you always had a light that shone so bright.

Forever in our hearts you will always be, with love to you from your brothers, sister-in-law and family; Terri Benoit (daughter), Shawn Benoit (son-in-law), Tonya Fraser (daughter). A Private Memorial Service will be held for the family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Kilt and Caber Ale House (53 High St SE, McKenzie Towne, Calgary) on Sunday, November 3, 2024, from 2:00-5:00pm, this will be a come and go affair, so anyone who wishes to pay respects, please come.

As Dad would say: “No time for tears; Raise your beers; And let’s say cheers”

In Dad’s honor, I will be starting a Go-Fund Me fundraiser for the Canadian Mental Health Association and Canadian Cancer Society.
