Donald Lane Grose passed away on May 6, 2025, at Oilfields General Hospital in Diamond Valley, Alberta, after a courageous battle with glioblastoma. He was 80 years old. True to form, Don retained his sense of humor until the very end, offering laughter even in his final days.
Born on October 12, 1944, in Drumheller, Alberta, Don was raised primarily in the communities of Carbon and Redcliff, Alberta, before eventually settling in Calgary, Alberta, in 1964.
Don worked for many years as an Accountant at Huber Oil, and after retiring, he embraced a second chapter as a cowboy and ranch hand, ending his working years doing something he absolutely loved: working with horses.
Don lived a life filled with adventure and a deep love for the outdoors. Whether it was camping in the mountains, navigating rapids in his whitewater kayak, skiing down Alberta’s slopes, golfing, cycling, or curling, Don found joy in nature and the simple pleasures of an active life.
He is eternally cherished by his wife of 15 years, Rebecca Horne. Don is also remembered by Rebecca’s three children: Bonnie (Danny) Mills and their three boys, Robert (Avery) MacLaine and their son, and Jake (Petra McDougall) MacLaine and their four children (predeceased by daughter Arya).
Don is survived by his two daughters from his previous marriage to the late Lynne Grose: Tracy (Kim) Himer and their son, Tristan; and Tammy Grose and her son, James. He is also survived by his brother, Roger (Susan) Grose, and their three adult children: Andrew (Bailey), Ashley, and Matthew. Don was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Gertrude Mae Grose.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Oilfields General Hospital for their compassionate care and support during Dad’s final weeks.
