Debra Lou LaRocque (née Schwalm), lovingly known as Debbie, passed away in Calgary, Alberta on April 14, 2026, at the age of 68.
Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Debbie lived a vibrant and meaningful life grounded in love, community, and creativity. She shared 49 years with her beloved husband, Kelly John LaRocque, including 38 years of marriage, after meeting in Inuvik, Northwest Territories.
Debbie’s career reflected her dynamic spirit and strong work ethic. She worked in the service industry across Western Canada, including roles at Rafter 6 Guest Ranch, Sunshine Ski Resort, and Chi-Chi’s Mexican Restaurant. After settling in Calgary, she managed Snickers Comedy Club and The Brass Cat Lounge, later working with Alberta Government Telephones and as a supervisor at Desperados Night Club.
She eventually found her true calling in community service, volunteering and later working with the Calgary Food Bank, as well as serving as Southern Alberta Representative for the Alberta Food Bank Association. Debbie also worked as Program and Activity Coordinator at the Ogden 50 Plus Activity Centre, where she built lasting connections.
A gifted musician, Debbie played the flute and clarinet and performed with the Regina Lions Club marching band, traveling to Europe and participating in two Rose Bowl Parades. She loved art, especially colour pencil drawing, and cherished time with her dog, Joy. Above all, she valued time spent with her family and friends.
Despite facing five major back surgeries and an eight-year battle with stage 4 throat cancer, Debbie showed remarkable strength and resilience throughout her life.
Debbie is survived by her husband, Kelly John LaRocque; her sisters, Teri Schwalm (Otto Tresher) of Saskatoon and Sheri Boegli (Larry) of Kitchener; her nieces and nephews, Brent (Lincoln, Layton, and Alice), Brandan, Cristina (Sophia and Isabelle), and Colin; her sisters-in-law, Carolyn and JoAnne; and many extended family members and dear friends.
She was predeceased by her mother, Bharbara Brown (née Johnston), and her father, Louis Herman Schwalm.
Debbie's memory will be forever cherished by her loving husband, family and all those that knew her.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
