It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Claudio Ivan Espinoza. Claudio passed away peacefully at home on November 24, 2025, at the age of 59, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Concepción, Chile, to Heriberto Espinoza and Maria Angelica Valdes, Claudio was the second of four children. Following the coup d'état in Chile, Claudio immigrated to Canada with his family in December 1975, where they began a new chapter of their lives in Calgary.
He is survived by his father, Heriberto; his siblings, Sergio (Johanne) Espinoza, Patricia (David) Cutten, and Yancy (Darrah) Espinoza; and his cherished nieces, Isabella, Iliana, and Madeline. He will be deeply missed by his constant companion, his cat Genie. Claudio was predeceased by his mother, Maria Valdes, 17 months prior.
Claudio’s life was a testament in resilience and joy. A gifted athlete in his youth, he suffered a rugby injury at age 18 that resulted in paralysis. He met this life-altering challenge with remarkable courage, reclaiming his independence through education. He studied Rehabilitation Studies at Mount Royal University (formerly MRC). Claudio also contributed his talents to the City of Calgary and the Calgary Paraplegic Association, while also giving back to his community through various volunteer roles. He built a life defined by strength, autonomy, and a refusal to be defined by his circumstances.
His wit, charm, and infectious sense of humor made him the heart of every gathering. Beyond being a brother, Claudio was a steadfast confidant to his siblings. He shared a particularly close friendship and a special bond with his older brother, Sergio, whose lifelong support, and companionship he deeply valued. As a devoted older brother to Patricia and Yancy, he took great pride in his role, teaching them to ride bikes, play games, taking them to and from school, and offering a lifetime of guidance. He also cherished his close friendships with his Uncle Jorge Valdes, cousin Pamela Valdes, Aunt Nina Espinoza, and Rod Gegear.
A man of vibrant passions, Claudio found great delight in cars, sports, and fine food, interests he shared generously with everyone he met. His zest for life served as a constant inspiration, proving that a spirit cannot be contained by physical limits.
While his presence will be deeply missed, Claudio’s legacy lives on in the stories, laughter, and cherished memories he leaves behind.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to his long-time care attendants, Mira, Anupa, and Gila. Their dedicated and compassionate care significantly enhanced Claudio’s quality of life, allowing him to live with the dignity, comfort, and independence he deserved.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January 17, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Evan J. Strong Funeral Services (5502 2 St SW, Calgary, AB).
