It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Christopher Anthony Murphy (58). Born on Aug 28, 1966, he was the son of the late Denis and Margaret (Lahey) Murphy. Christopher is survived by his wife Brenda, two stepchildren Norman Fenn (Else) and Natasha Gemby (Mike), 4 grandchildren – Christian (16), Rebekah (7), Simon (4) and little Calla (1) and his two special companions, Kali and Finley. He is survived by his siblings - Margaret Arthur, Rosemarie DeYoung (Malcolm), Annette Paul, Martina Murphy (Michael), Colleen Murphy, John Murphy (Kim) and Shawn Murphy along with many nieces and nephews.
Christopher valued long-term friendships as foundational: among his most cherished relationships were Maurice Richard of Halifax whom he had known since both were 5 years old, and Randall Thibault of Eastern Passage; having known him since both were in grade seven. Chris also learned even new friends could become as valued as those forged in childhood, like the man he glowingly referred to as “the world’s greatest neighbor”, Harley Calkins (Calgary, by way of Saskatchewan).
Having completed most of his education (Hons Psychology, Power Eng. & Accounting) in Halifax, NS, Christopher would eventually move to Western Canada where he worked in Power Production, as well as the Oil & Gas sector.
Family was the most important aspect of Chris’ life, and he loved every opportunity that would bring as many of his family together as could be arranged. As a very proud Canadian, he also loved the experience of driving back and forth across the country four times, gaining valuable insights from just speaking with other Canadians with whom he would cross paths on his journeys. The best of these trips and other destinations across the world were the ones that included his loving wife, Brenda. He loved sharing those travels with her (and, when possible, their faithful companions Kali & Finley) and planning the next adventure upon returning from the latest one.
Chris was an avid pickleball player, he would play with anyone who was interested. He loved to introduce others to the game, but when it came to being competitive, look out – he was the champ!
Nothing, though, could beat the frequent trips home to NS, where family gatherings were a chance to catch-up, recall stories of childhood days that included visits from Uncles, Aunts, and cousins from both his mom and dad’s families.
It is a life lost too soon – he will be so dearly missed.
Cremation will take place at Evan J Strong Funeral Home in Calgary. A memorial will be held at a later date in Kentville, NS.
