Brian Christie Mitchell, a loving husband, devoted father, proud "Papa," and cherished friend, passed away peacefully at home in Calgary, Alberta, on June 11, 2025, at the age of 84. He was surrounded by his loved ones in his final moments.
Born on May 6, 1941, in Kimberley, British Columbia, Brian was the beloved son of Clarance “Jack” (d. April 3, 2013) and Lola (d. July 13, 1981) Mitchell. He grew up in Rossland alongside his siblings, David (Joyce) Mitchell, John Charles (d. April 1946 age (5 months), and Diane Armitage (née Mitchell), forming deep family bonds that remained strong throughout his life.
Growing up in beautiful British Columbia played a significant role in his lifelong love of skiing and the mountains. Brian attended the University of Oregon, where he earned his B.Sc. in Engineering (and as his father was fond of saying, "not a day too early, or a dollar too soon"), laying the foundation for a long and successful career.
He found his true calling in real estate development, dedicating over 45 years to shaping the Calgary landscape with passion and integrity. His legacy includes numerous contributions to the city he loved—most memorably, a wristwatch buried somewhere in the base of the Calgary Tower. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Carol (née McBean) Mitchell, with whom he built a life rich in love, adventure, and unwavering partnership.
Brian was a proud and loving father to Nicole Talbot (Mike) and Candace Spankie (Troy), and a devoted Papa to Peyton and Burke Spankie, and Lane and Parker Talbot. His steady guidance, boundless patience, and warm heart made him a constant source of strength and joy to his family. He is also survived by his paternal cousin, Mardi Smith (née Mitchell). Brian was known for his quick smile, infectious laugh, sharp wit, and generous spirit. He valued relationships above all else. He cultivated and maintained close ties with his extended family, including his dad’s later in life wife, Florence Mitchell (d. Oct 11, 1993), and nieces and nephews Dawn Gordon (née Mitchell), Glen Mitchell, Scott Mitchell, Charlie Armitage, and Tracy West (née Armitage), as well as his sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie (née McBean) and Rod Embree.
His life was enriched by decades-long friendships—from childhood friends in Trail and college connections, to colleagues, neighbors, travel companions, and lake friends. Each of these relationships meant the world to him, and he was deeply grateful for the community he and Carol built together. Brian treasured time with his family, especially moments spent by the water, vacations with loved ones, and any occasion that brought people together. His kindness, wisdom, mischievous sense of humor, and zest for life touched everyone he met and left a lasting impression.
Brian will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
