Bertha (Bert) Doreen Popovich (Morison), age 93 years of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on February 19, 2026.

Bert was born on  December 18, 1932, in Innisfail, Alberta, and was raised 8 miles west of Innisfail in the Big Bend District. She was the youngest of ten children born to William and Ethel Morison. As a young girl, Bert enjoyed spending time outdoors with her father.

After grade school, she was enrolled in Home Economics at Olds College and became a proficient cook and homemaker. After college, she moved to Whitehorse, Yukon and worked as a telephone operator. While living in Whitehorse, Bert met the love of her life, John Popovich. They were married on April 14, 1956, and were blessed with two children, Richard John Colin and Kathryn Charlotte Ethel.

Bert was very athletic and over the years excelled and played competitively in many sports including fastball, horseshoes, bowling, and curling. She continued to enjoy golf and curling into her 90’s. Bert was also an accomplished seamstress and as well, enjoyed many different artistic endeavours. She also spent time volunteering her time with many organizations including “Victims Services” and “Hospice Care.” She also spent over 30 years volunteering for “Meals on Wheels”. In 2024, Bert was recognized as “Volunteer of the Year” with the “Canadian Condominium Institute of Southern Alberta”.

Bert was predeceased by her husband John Popovich and second husband Don Jamieson, parents William and Ethel Morison, siblings: Bill, John, Charlotte Barton, Gordon, Colin, Ron, Alan, Betty Bateman, Peggy Wrightson, and son-in-law, Jim Sie.

Bert is survived by her children, Richard Popovich (Deborah) and Kathryn Sie, as well as six grandchildren and five great grandchildren: Shelley, Charmaine, Camille, Carmen, Stuart, Jenna, Gabriela, Cooper, Declan, Everett and Fletcher. Bert also had numerous nieces and nephews which she enjoyed spending time with; one niece in particular is Ethel Olorenshaw (Morison), with whom she had a very special relationship. Also, very important to Bert, was her beloved dog Maggie who brought her countless hours of joy.

A “Celebration of Bert’s Life” will be held Friday, May 22, 2026, from 2:00 – 5:00 pm at Sanderson Ridge, 2330 Fish Creek Blvd SW, Calgary - Sanderson Room.

Bert’s family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers at Foothills Country Hospice at Okotoks, Alberta, for their exceptional care, compassion, and attention that Bert received during her stay. In lieu of flowers, a contribution in Bert’s memory can be made at Foothills Country Hospice Society.
