Beatrice Flood Obituary

Beatrice Louise Flood died peacefully and surrounded by family on March 27, 2024, at her home in Calgary.

Born July 3, 1927, in Central Butte, Saskatchewan to Jane (McKay) and John Rutherford, Bea was the youngest sibling of Margaret, Don, Isobel and Alice. She was a proud alumnus of the University of Saskatchewan, Class of 1948. Bea married the love of her life, Lloyd Flood in 1950 and together they raised four children, Barbara Bodiguel (Marcel), Jane Grace, Clinton Flood (Brenda Perreaux), and Craig Flood (Caroline Rowan).

Bea and Lloyd moved from Regina to Calgary in 1959. The city was a great home for the young family, full of close friends, golf at Canyon Meadows and skiing in the mountains. In 1973, Bea and Lloyd moved to Jakarta, Indonesia, where Lloyd worked for Bow Valley Exploration. They relocated again to Singapore in 1976. Bea embraced life in Southeast Asia, making many friends from around the world over games of golf and bridge. She and Lloyd returned to Calgary in 1983, where they enjoyed a wonderful retirement filled with a large community of friends, many travels around the globe, and numerous volunteer activities in Calgary.

Bea was devoted to family and her home was always a warm and welcoming haven. Her sharp mind, quick wit, curiosity and generous hospitality endured to the last days of her astonishingly healthy and active 96 years. Bea had an especially deep and warm relationship with her ten grandchildren, Joel, Jordan, Stefan and Keelan Bodiguel; Sarah Irvine; Leeann, Kayla and Cameron Flood; and Chloe and Nina Rowan. She listened to their thoughts and dreams with love and compassion, an open heart and mind, and always a comforting word. She was also very close to the spouses and partners of her children and grandchildren and they, too, became part of her big heart. In recent years, Bea was blessed to become “GiGi” to eight beautiful great-grandchildren.

Bea was predeceased in 2011, by her beloved Lloyd. Despite this loss and the hole it left, Bea remained active and interested in the world and all that was in it. She loved laughing with family, sitting on her balcony near Fish Creek Park, listening to the birds, and taking in the sky and clouds above. Wherever she is, the birds will be well fed and the flowers lovingly tended.

The family is grateful to Elwira and Gina, who cared for Bea with tenderness and love in the last days of her life.

There will be a Celebration of Bea's Life later in the year when the flowers are out and the greens on the golf course are in great shape. Donations in her name to Doctors Without Borders would be welcome.
