We announce the passing of Arthur “Art” Kendall Shaw, on Thursday, March 6, 2025, in Calgary, AB, at the age of 70.
Did you know him as Big Art, Artie, Edith!, Artman or Obe-Wan?
Or perhaps he was a friend, colleague, cousin or mentor? However you knew him, we share your grief and appreciate your regards in spirit and word.
We are Art’s survivors; Chris, Mark, Sheila, Kelly, Suzanne, Chantel and Aaron.
Art passed gracefully and peacefully at home after bravely and tenaciously combating cancer for over two years.
Art’s parents, aunts and uncles all predeceased him. For our unnamed cousins and families, we love you as did Art.
Just to be certain you know something about Art we offer a glimpse into a few of his interests and passions.
Cars.
His 1968 Camaro in particular, which is now mint thanks to a few living angels.
On his 70th birthday this year, Art called shotgun and he was able to feel, smell and hear his pride and joy one last time on a beautiful and unforgettable sunny day.
Of course cars took him many places, in life and career, and introduced him to many of you. He was a master at wet sanding and some of your beloved cars came to life thanks to his polishing skills.
Vegas.
Incredible was Art’s love for vintage Vegas and his memorabilia collection is rich with images, articles and artefacts that capture an era that Art loved.
The Spruce Goose.
If you were not savvy to this story, Art was better than Google at bringing you up to speed on this feat of Howard Hughes who was an enigma to Art. Again his collection is outstanding and worthy of the official museum.
As Art would say he has a “bitchin collection” of lamps, lighters, ash trays, radios, magazines, models, toys, bicycles, 50s decor and vintage christmas, all of which brought him joy. In addition to material possessions Art pursued car shows, road trips, family time and genuine friendships.
Whether material or experiential, collecting was the common theme of his passions and he showed us time and again his incredible eye for rarity and beauty.
Art was quiet, reserved and deliberate, and never wavered on his sense of fairness or charity. He was there for you. Always.
Your friendships, shared adventures, creativity and humour all touched and enriched Art. We thank you for knowing and loving him.
A Celebration of Art's Life will be held at the Haysboro Community Centre (1204 89 Ave SW, Calgary) on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 1:00pm - 3:00pm.
