Arlie May Ashby, aged 91, passed away peacefully on a sunny fall day, October 16, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta.
Born on September 12, 1934, in Roblin, Manitoba, Arlie lived a life defined by compassion, service, and an unwavering sense of independence.
The youngest of five children born to John Sidney Ashby and Gertrude Ashby (née Cameron), Arlie was predeceased by her siblings Gladys (Ken) Burch, George (Dolly), Mildred, and Gordon (Lois) Ashby. Her formative years in Roblin shaped a deep-rooted commitment to community and faith that would guide her throughout her life.
Arlie was a devoted mother to her only daughter Sjaune-Loree Zabel (Bert) and took immense pride in being a grandmother to Bri-Anna Kaitlyn and Hubertus John. Her love for family extended warmly to her nieces Patti, Gina, and Colleen-daughters of her brother George (Isabel) -and Debbie, Sheryl, and Barbara-daughters of her brother Gordon (Lois) and their families.
A woman of steadfast faith and conviction, Arlie was an active member of the United Church throughout her life. She participated in congregations in Roblin, Calgary, and Victoria, British Columbia. Her dedication to service shone through in countless ways-from volunteering at various United Churches, offering compassionate outreach at Wilkinson Road Jail in Victoria and supporting homeless youth with warm socks or a jar of peanut butter. Whether lending a helping hand or simply listening with empathy, Arlie’s presence brought comfort wherever she went.
Nature held a special place in Arlie’s heart, and her favorite season was fall. She found solace and inspiration outdoors and often expressed this connection through quiet reflection and gentle acts of kindness. She loved painting, taking pictures, writing and telling stories. Her favourite color was purple - a shade that symbolized dignity and creativity for her - and she cherished the poem “When I Am Old, I Shall Wear Purple,” which beautifully captured her spirited embrace of aging with grace and humor.
Arlie will be remembered for the strength of her independent spirit and the warmth of her loving nature. Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched with generosity, faithfulness, and enduring resilience.
Special gratitude goes out to all the staff at Age Care McKenzie Towne Long Term Care in Calgary, where Arlie lived for six years. Their care, kindness, and attention to details and ensuring Arlie’s hair was always in a flawless bun and her purple clothes were all matching were deeply appreciated.
May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her. In Lieu of donations or flowers please take a walk in nature and enjoy the fall.
