Allan Cloutier Obituary

Allan died peacefully at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, following a brief illness after having had surgery in early December. He is remembered by his sons, Steve Cloutier (Merran Christie), John Stephens and their mother Claire Stephens (Marty Hislop); by his son Max Bouchard and Max’s mother Lorraine Bouchard; and by his granddaughters Kit Cloutier (Tobias Lindqvist), Elizabeth Cloutier (Sebastien Morellon) and Barbara Bouchard.

Allan was born in the Montreal neighbourhood of Notre Dame de Grace  to George Cloutier and Mona (Patton) Cloutier. He attended Loyola High School (class of 1952) and lived most of his Montreal life in or near NDG. He spent 45 years in the insurance business, almost all of which as a commercial broker with such firms as Osborne & Lange, Simmons & Company, Dale & Company and Morris & Mackenzie.

Although an insurance broker by day, in his early years, Allan’s off-hours were spent in Montreal’s downtown  as a jazz aficionado, upright bass player and spiritual searcher, gathering with others to study the writings of G.I. Gurdjieff.

He later coached community youth baseball and hockey; and volunteered with a local troupe of the Boys Scouts of Canada, bringing his young family with him annually to Tamaracouta Scout Reserve in the Laurentians north of Montreal, where Steve, John and Claire enjoyed the comforts of the family cabins while Allan camped out in tents with the other Scout leader dads.

In 1995 Allan retired and made the move to Calgary, joining his ex-pat Montreal family who’d relocated earlier. Shortly after, granddaughters Kit and Liz came along and were embraced by their “Grandad”. In 2005, Allan met Shirley Martin at choir practice, and they shared a wonderful seventeen years before she passed away. Allan and Shirley’s joy was music; they’d listen to an eclectic mix of old and new(ish) songs across many genres and would be known to spontaneously break into song together.

In addition to enthusiastic choir participation, Allan loved jokes, watching sports, volunteering with Shirley at the Chinook Mall Calgary Police Service desk, drives to the mountains and spending time with family.

A private family celebration of life has occurred and was followed immediately by cremation.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his favorite choir, the Perfectly Imperfects, through e-transfer to yycperfimperf@nucleus.com, or by cheque to Box 78086, Heritage Drive SE, Calgary AB, T2H 2Y1.
